Why is Lyft still using my location?

Lyft uses your phone's location services to give you a great ride experience. We only access your location if the Lyft app is running on your phone. If you close the app, we won't access that info. Sharing your location data with us turns background location sharing on.

If you notice the location icon on your phone stays active after a ride, it is likely due to the "Background Location Sharing" setting within the Lyft app. In 2026, Lyft uses this data to improve pickup accuracy, verify "Share My Ride" safety features for your friends, and provide "Time to Leave" notifications based on your calendar. If you find this intrusive, you can go into your phone's settings (iOS or Android) and change the location permission to "While Using the App" only. Additionally, within the Lyft app's Privacy settings, you can toggle off "Background location sharing." By doing this, the app will only access your GPS when the app is actively open on your screen. In 2026, apps are increasingly transparent about this, but the default is often set to "Always" to ensure that the driver can find you even if your phone is in your pocket while you wait at the curb.
