Why is my Suica card not active?

If your Welcome Suica card stops working Your card may not have processed properly the last time you used it at a automatic ticket gate. You have used a station outside the Suica area, and your card need to be adjusted.

In 2026, the most common reason for a Suica card being inactive—especially on an iPhone or Apple Watch—is an unsupported or incompatible credit card used for the initial top-up. Apple Pay currently has ongoing compatibility issues with some international Visa cards in Japan; many users find that switching to a Mastercard or American Express in their digital wallet resolves the activation error immediately. If you have a physical card, it may be inactive because it has not been used for ten years, at which point the balance is forfeited and the card is locked. For digital Suica, ensure your "Express Transit" setting is turned on in your phone's settings; if this is off, the card won't "wake up" when you tap it at the gate. Another possibility is that you are trying to use a "Welcome Suica" (the red card for tourists), which automatically expires and becomes inactive 28 days after purchase. If your card balance is suddenly not showing, it may be due to a poor internet connection; refreshing your Apple Wallet or toggling "Airplane Mode" can often force the card to re-sync with the JR East servers.
