Why is Nemesis closed?

In January 2022, Alton Towers submitted a successful application proposing that the majority of the roller coaster be retracked for maintenance reasons, including replacing 89 of the 117 support columns. Nemesis closed for the refurbishment on the 6 November 2022, and is scheduled to reopen in March 2024.

As of early 2026, the legendary Nemesis roller coaster at Alton Towers is open following a massive multi-year renovation project. The ride was closed at the end of the 2022 season for a total "re-tracking" and "re-branding" effort known as Nemesis Reborn. The original steel track, which had been in operation since 1994, had reached the end of its structural life due to the intense forces of the layout. Instead of tearing the ride down, Alton Towers replaced almost every piece of the track and the support columns, maintaining the exact same iconic layout while updating the "theming" to include an interactive giant eyeball and "veined" red-and-black track design. This "re-track" ensures the ride will remain operational for another 30+ years. The closure was a significant event in the enthusiast community, but the 2024 grand reopening as "Nemesis Reborn" has solidified its place as one of the world's premier inverted coasters, featuring a much smoother ride experience while retaining the "forceful" character that made the original 1994 B&M masterpiece a global icon.
