Why is New York Central Park so big?

Living conditions for the working class were squalid and unhealthy. Civic leaders felt we needed a large open space for the public (who at the time resorted to picnicking in Long Island cemeteries). And also, to make New York a world class city, a grand public park like those in the capitals of Europe.
