Why is open return better?

Open Return tickets allow you to be flexible on the train you decide to travel back on. There are two different ways to buy Open Return tickets. If you started your search by selecting Return journey you'll be asked to choose which train you want to return on, even if the ticket you select is an Open Return ticket.

Anytime tickets have no restrictions on the time of day that you can travel. With Anytime Single tickets, you can travel on any train on the date of travel booked. You can also break up your journey at stations along your route. Buying an Anytime Return train ticket gives you even more freedom!

What is a Super Off-Peak Return ticket? A Super Off-Peak Return ticket is the same as the Off-Peak Return ticket above, requiring you to make the outward portion of your journey on the date shown on the ticket. The only difference is that you must travel during Super Off-Peak times.

If a train is cancelled (and that's what's happened here) you're entitled to take the next train that matches any restrictions on your ticket. So if your ticket is routed via a certain place, you must go that way, or if it's only valid on a certain train company, you must use that companies services.
