Guests hoping to experience the iconic coaster will be out of luck, however, as Disney is gearing up to shut it down later this month. This refurbishment comes months ahead of the ride's permanent closure at the Resort, with a complete transformation of Space Mountain taking place in 2024.
We're talking, of course, about Space Mountain. Reportedly, the roller coaster caught fire, causing the emergency lights to flash and the entire building to evacuate.
Space Mountain was “flight tested” by a group of US astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. In the early 1970's NASA and Russia were working together on a possible flight program and they came to visit the Johnson Space Center in Florida – and spent a day at Disney World to be some of the first to ride Space Mountain!
What ride will replace Splash Mountain? Tiana's Bayou Adventure will replace Splash Mountain at Disneyland and Disney World. The new ride is inspired by the animated Disney film The Princess and the Frog.
The new opening date is now scheduled for the following day, October 27th, 2023. This isn't a huge delay but it could be a bit disappointing if you were lining up your park plans to ride Space Mountain specifically on its reopening day.
Because you cannot see the ride's infrastructure, Space Mountain is no longer simply a roller coaster in a dimly lighted building with some Buck Rogers planets and meteors projected on the ceiling.
EE has a faster top speed and more thrilling drops, and theres that backwards portion. The view from the top is great also. Space is a fun coaster in complete darkness but EE still holds more thrills for me ... even with a bad Yeti component.
Now, inspired by the film 'The Princess and the Frog', Tiana's Bayou Adventure will replace Splash Mountain as Walt Disney World. The new installment will offer sights and sounds of New Orleans to both the resorts in 2024.
As the title says, Space Mountain and other attractions often break for an hour or two and then they are back up and running. I was curious what actually is happening? Space Mountain has systems in place that require each train to be unloaded and reloaded in 20 seconds. If this time frame isn't met the ride shuts down.
