Why is the A350 so efficient?

Unparalleled aerodynamics The A350's 64.75m wing-span is designed using nature's perfect understanding of aerodynamics to maximise lift and reduce drag, further optimising fuel burn and lowering CO2 emissions. Another wing-design feature is the Variable Camber (VC).

The Airbus A350 was developed in response to Boeing's successful 787 Dreamliner, aiming to offer equal or better range and efficiency. The aircraft features a wider cabin compared to the 787, allowing for high-density configurations if desired, and boasts quieter cabins and optimized air quality.

Range and flexibility. Surprisingly, for all its size, the A380 can't go as far as the A350. The A350-1000 can travel more than 1,000 km (540 NM) further than the A380. Singapore Airlines has a special 'ultra-long-range' (ULR) A350-900, which operates on the longest route in the world, from Singapore to New York JFK.

More sustainable. The A350 is designed to be a quieter, cleaner aircraft delivering 25% less fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat. The quietest in its class the A350 has reduced its noise footprint by 50% vs previous generation aircraft as well as lowering NOx emissions.

The global A350 fleet had completed more than 1,175,000 flights on more than 1070 routes without accidents. It succeeds the A340 and competes against Boeing's large long-haul twinjets: the Boeing 787, the Boeing 777, and its successor, the 777X.

The aircraft incorporates advanced noise reduction technologies and sound-insulating materials to minimize engine noise and vibrations. The result is an overall remarkably quiet cabin environment.

Haven't flown those on BA, but the A350 is much quieter than the B777 and would be my choice for that reason alone. You're also likely to have a newer cabin, unless BA refurbished the 777s. Our flight between Denver and Heathrow is on an A350.

A better design. Winging it: The curves at the end of modern airplane wings are all about efficiency. As air flows around a plane's wings, it generates high pressure on the bottom surface and low pressure on the top one, which creates lift.

Current title holder for the aircraft with the longest ETOPS rating is the Airbus 350-900, certified to fly for up to 370 minutes on one engine. That gives it a maximum diversion distance up to 2500 nautical miles, or 4630 kilometres.

The Dreamliner is slightly longer while the A350 is slightly wider, although both jets have identical maximum passenger capacities. In terms of performance, the A350 is ultimately a heavier aircraft with more fuel capacity and more powerful engines.

The sound pressure levels of Airbus A380–800 were lowest among selected models, while the in-cabin pressure level values of Airbus A350-900 were maximum.
