Why is the carpet in the Westminster Abbey yellow?

The striking colours of the yellow and blue carpet can be seen on the specially built Coronation Theatre, from in between the quire stalls to the front of the Cosmati Pavement. These colours were chosen to highlight and contrast with the robes of The King and Queen.

The presence of a yellow (gold) carpet in Westminster Abbey is a traditional feature specifically for coronations. During the coronation of King Charles III in 2023, the use of a yellow carpet in the "Coronation Theater" (the area between the choir and the high altar) was a deliberate choice to provide a regal backdrop that would highlight and contrast with the ornate, heavy robes worn by the King and Queen. While some observers noted that the combination of the yellow carpet and the blue carpet in the nave resembled the flag of Ukraine, Buckingham Palace officially described this as a "happy coincidence" rather than a political statement. Historically, gold has always been the color associated with the "Sacred" and "Royal" aspects of the ceremony. In 2026, the Abbey continues to use traditional colors for its various liturgical and state events, but the "Golden Carpet" remains the most iconic visual symbol of the space where British monarchs have been crowned for nearly a thousand years.
