Why is the Disneyland Monorail closed?

Disney has just announced that the Disneyland Resort monorail is closed for refurbishment beginning today, July 5th, and will remain closed through August 31, 2023. The monorail at Disneyland differs from the one in Walt Disney World, as guests can ride it directly into Disneyland Park and get off near Tomorrowland.



As of early 2026, the Disneyland Monorail has been experiencing intermittent and scheduled closures for a major infrastructure refurbishment. Following a high-profile power failure in January 2026 that required a guest evacuation, Disney fast-tracked a series of technical upgrades to the aging "beamway" and the power distribution system. While the Monorail frequently closes for routine maintenance when temperatures exceed 95°F (to protect the electric motors from overheating), the 2026 closures are more structural. Disney is currently modernizing the Mark VII trains and the automated control systems to ensure higher reliability for the next decade. If you are visiting in March 2026, the Monorail is scheduled for a formal refurbishment period starting March 30, 2026, which will temporarily cut off the direct transportation link between Downtown Disney and Tomorrowland, requiring guests to use the main park entrance on foot.
