Monaco does not have an airport simply because there is no physical space for one. As the second smallest country in the world, Monaco covers just 2.02 square kilometers (0.78 sq miles)—smaller than New York's Central Park. Its terrain is a narrow, densely packed strip of land squeezed between the Mediterranean Sea and the steep foothills of the Alps. To build even a modest runway, the principality would have to demolish a significant portion of its world-famous luxury real estate or undertake an impossibly expensive sea-reclamation project. Instead, Monaco relies on an agreement with the neighboring Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) in France, located about 19 miles away. For 2026 travelers, the "Monaco experience" often starts with a 7-minute helicopter transfer from Nice directly to the Monaco Heliport, or a scenic 30-minute drive along the iconic Moyenne Corniche, offering some of the most beautiful coastal views in Europe.
