In 2026, a MagicBand from 2016 will still have functional "passive" capabilities but will likely have lost its "active" features. The internal RFID chip used for "tapping" at park entrances, Lightning Lane touchpoints, and hotel room doors does not require a battery and will work indefinitely. However, the long-range battery—which typically lasts 2–3 years—will almost certainly be dead. This means the band will no longer automatically link ride photos to your account or trigger interactive elements in the parks. While you can still use it for basic entry, you would need to manually scan your band at photo kiosks to claim your pictures. For the full modern experience, including haptic feedback and rechargeable batteries, most guests now upgrade to the MagicBand+.
