The amusement park originally opened as Marriott's Great America on May 29, 1976, as one of two theme parks built by the Marriott Corporation. Six Flags acquired the amusement park in 1984 after the theme park division was an earnings disappointment for Marriott.

Pay attention to height requirements: This can be a tricky thing if your younger child is a thrill-seeker. Most of the thrill rides have a requirement of 42-54 inches to ride. The family area has either no requirement or 36-42 inches. The majority of the rides at Six Flags are best for ages 6 and older.
