Are dogs allowed at Island in the Sky Canyonlands?

Within Canyonlands National Park are two campgrounds that welcome dogs, Island in the Sky Campground (Willow Flat) and the Needles Campground. Willow Flat is a very basic campground. Facilities do not include running water, electricity, or showers. There are seasonal vault toilets.

You may not take a pet on any hiking trails. You may have your pet with you in the campground, and at pullouts along the paved scenic drives. You may walk your pets on roads or in parking lots, but they must be leashed at all times when outside a vehicle.

There's really no way to say which part of Canyonlands National Park is the best, but we'd recommend that first-time visitors start with the Island in the Sky before heading to the Needles. The Island in the Sky has more impressive vistas and easier trails, and it's closer to Moab so you can get there a little faster.

As one of the most challenging day-hikes in Canyonlands National Park, the Druid Arch Trail is a fantastic hike if you are up for work. This hike includes a significant amount of elevation gain (1633 feet) over the 10.4-mile (round-trip) hike.

Pets are prohibited from hiking trails, public buildings (i.e. visitor centers), and backcountry areas, including the Badlands Wilderness Area, and areas with prairie dog colonies. Pet etiquette dictates always cleaning up animal waste and disposing of it in trash receptacles.

A high-clearance, low range four-wheel-drive vehicle is required on the White Rim Road and all backcountry roads at The Needles and The Maze.

This does not mean you should not visit Canyonlands, but you may want to spend more time in Arches than Canyonlands if you are short on time. We would also agree that Arches is a better visit, but if you want to explore the wilderness by 4×4, then Canyonlands is a better option.

You can still visit the short (and gorgeous) hikes in Canyonlands if you don't have time or don't want to do a more difficult/longer day hike. We preferred Canyonlands due to the longer trails and much fewer people. But if you're looking for shorter trails and lots of arches, Arches might be your better bet.

Dogs are not allowed in Zion's visitor centers, the Human History Museum, the Zion Lodge, and any other public buildings in the national park. Dogs cannot ride on Zion's free park shuttle, even if you carry them or hold them in your lap. Angels Landing is NOT a dog-friendly trail.
