London buses are card only, so you cannot buy a ticket with cash. Use a Visitor Oyster card*, an Oyster card, a Travelcard or a contactless payment card to pay your fare. Unlike the Tube zone fare system, a single London bus journey costs £1.75 no matter how far you go.

Paying for your ticket If paying by cash, make sure you have coins with you before getting on the bus. You will need to have the exact money as our drivers cannot give you change (except on Airlink). Please keep your ticket for the duration of your journey.

Scottish ITSO Smartcards Depending on the operator, tickets can be loaded onto your chosen ITSO smartcard at ticket offices, ticket vending machines, on board or in advance online and can be paid for with cash, card or contactless.

We can accept payments of up to £50 from bank cards which have the contactless symbol, as shown below. Visa, Mastercard and Maestro cards can be used to make payments on our buses, however we are unable to accept payments made using American Express cards.

If your bank card shows the contactless payment symbol, you can use it to pay as you go straight away. You'll pay an adult rate fare. Many contactless cards issued outside the UK can be used to pay as you go for travel (overseas transaction fees may apply):

Eligibility. If you live in Scotland and are 5-21 years old you are eligible for a card giving you free bus travel. Children under 5 years old already travel for free on buses and don't need a card. Applications for cards are now open.

You can pay for your ticket with cash or by debit or credit card at any of our 143 staffed station ticket offices. We aim to serve customers within five minutes at peak times, and three minutes at off-peak times, so give yourself enough time to buy a ticket.

Catch the bus Tickets for the Airlink 100, taking you straight to the city centre, can be purchased from the driver as you board using contactless card payment, m-tickets or the exact cash fare. Other bus routes and companies will accept either online bookings or payment on board using cash or contactless card payment.
