Luton (LTN) Like Gatwick and Stansted, London's fourth airport, at Luton, is nearly 30 miles from the city center. Yet despite being the same distance from town, it's the quickest of the three to reach by train (not including the shuttle bus to the terminal).

It is not as if the city of London planned where to put each airport. They were there when the need for additional capacity appeared; in some cases the airports initially served local municipalities and cargo airlines, later to be used by charter and other airlines when the airports closer to London were full.

For convenience and timings, I'd say Gatwick even though they are both on the same train line which goes through the centre of London (50 minutes to St. Pancras). Luton is more of a low-cost, no frills hub and is much smaller than Gatwick. I would go with Luton but see which airport has the cheapest fares.

There's very little in it; both have good rail links. You have to get on a shuttle bus to the train station from Luton whereas Gatwick station is at the airport so that might give Gatwick a slight edge. But I'd choose the airport with the more convenient/cheaper flights.
