Can I use credit card for Bangkok train?

Many of us are aware of the 2 major train lines in Bangkok, MRT and BTS. Recently I found out you can use your debit/ credit card to enter and pay for your MRT rides, as long as you use a VISA or Mastercard.

In 2026, the ability to use a credit card for Bangkok's trains depends on which system you are using. For the MRT (Blue and Purple Lines), you can simply tap your contactless Visa or Mastercard (including foreign cards) directly at the turnstiles to enter and exit; the system will automatically calculate the fare. This is the most convenient option for tourists. However, for the BTS Skytrain (Green and Gold Lines), you cannot tap a credit card at the gates. You must either buy a single-journey ticket at a machine (which often requires cash or a Thai QR code) or use a "Rabbit Card" that you top up at a ticket office. While you can use a credit card to buy a Rabbit Card or top it up at the counter (with a minimum of 200-300 THB), you cannot tap the card itself to ride. The Airport Rail Link also primarily requires cash for tokens at machines, though some ticket counters now accept cards for transactions above a certain amount. Carrying some local Thai Baht (THB) remains essential for a smooth transit experience in Bangkok.

Ticketing: The BTS uses ticket cards available from machines (many only accept coins) or the ticketing window (if it's open). Tickets aren't checked on trains, but they are required to exit the turnstiles at your destination, so keep it handy!
