How do you pay for trains in Bangkok?

Ticketing: The BTS uses ticket cards available from machines (many only accept coins) or the ticketing window (if it's open). Tickets aren't checked on trains, but they are required to exit the turnstiles at your destination, so keep it handy!

In Bangkok, you primarily pay for trains using the Rabbit Card (for BTS Skytrain) and the MRTA Blue Card (for MRT Subway). Here’s a breakdown of the main systems and payment methods:

1. BTS Skytrain (Elevated trains)

  • Rabbit Card: A reusable contactless smart card that can be topped up. It’s the most convenient way for frequent riders.
  • Single Journey Tickets: Paper tickets purchased from vending machines at stations (cash only).
  • Rabbit LINE Pay: You can link your Rabbit Card to LINE Pay for top-ups and use.
  • Day Passes: Unlimited travel within a day (available at ticket offices).

2. MRT Subway (Underground trains)

  • MRTA Blue Card: A contactless card for the MRT system, separate from the Rabbit Card.
  • Single Journey Tokens: Plastic tokens purchased from vending machines (cash or card).
  • Tourist Passes: Available for unlimited travel over 1, 3, or 5 days.

3. Airport Rail Link (ARL)

  • Connects Suvarnabhumi Airport to the city.
  • Single Journey Tickets: Purchased at stations (cash/card).
  • Stored Value Card: A separate card for the ARL (not integrated with BTS/MRT).

4. SRT Red Lines (Commuter trains)

  • Operated by the State Railway of Thailand.
  • Contactless Cards: SRT’s own card or the Mangmoom Card (see below).
