Can I use FasTrak and pay later?

You have 48 hours to pay after your recent toll crossing, or we will send an invoice for the toll amount to the registered owner of the vehicle. You can set up payment for future toll crossings that you plan to make within the next 30 days.

If a valid FasTrak toll tag is not detected, an image of the vehicle license plate will be used to send a violation notice to the vehicle’s registered owner through the mail. The notice will include the toll amount plus a penalty for using the express lane without a valid FasTrak toll tag.

As belomiser says, tolls are not mandatory (except for the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge). There are regular tolls and there are automated tolls. For regular tolls, you just use the Cash lanes to pay. You need to have cash or there will be fees or fines if you do not have enough cash.
