Can I walk the National Mall at night?

The public may visit the sites of National Mall and Memorial Parks 24 hours a day, with the exception of the Washington Monument which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rangers are on duty at the sites to answer questions from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. in November - February.

It's safe all the time. A criminal would have to be really stupid to try something on the Mall, what with all the police patrolling around. With sunset at 8:30 pm, you are going to find lots of people walking around the monuments for the next couple of hours after that.

The Lincoln Memorial is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Rangers are on duty from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The easiest way to reach the Memorial is by Metrorail or Metrobus. The nearest Metro stations are Foggy Bottom and Smithsonian, both on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines.

Safety isn't really much of an issue around the monuments at anytime and the later you go, the more likely you'll be to have fewer people around. We've enjoyed many an evening at the monuments after 11pm, many times as the only ones there (which is more likely in the winter than in other times of the year).
