Can you bring alcohol on VIA Rail?

Can we bring our personal alcoholic drinks on board? No, Provincial laws forbid passengers from consuming personal alcoholic drinks on the trains. Personal alcoholic drinks may only be consumed inside private sleeping car cabins on some trains. Read VIA's full policy concerning alcoholic beverages.

If you're in a sleeper, bottled water is supplied to you, as well as all meals in the Dining Car. There's no restriction on how much waster or other liquids you can bring, unlike the airlines. You can bring up to five litres of alcohol with an alcohol volume between 24% and 70%. This can travel in your cabin bag if you purchased it in the airport duty-free shop, or you can pack in your checked baggage.

You're allowed to take your own wine or beer on board, but Eurostar may confiscate any 'excessive' alcohol, for example if you look as if you're going to cause trouble. Transporting an unopened bottle or two of vintage wine or single-malt in your luggage should not be a problem.

Starting from September 30, 2023 Trenitalia will slowly introduce a mandatory CHECK IN policy for Regional Train ticket holders. As a result, any regional train tickets specifying NOT VALID TO TRAVEL will require a CHECK IN to be performed which would be a process to validate the tickets for usage.
