Can you find out if a flight is full?

Some airports have signs at the gate that will show how full the flight is. The only other option is to go through the sales flow at least a couple of hours before departure and put the guest count up to 8 (the max it will allow) and see if that flight is still available.

Simplest way is to call the airline and ask - they may not tell you the # of open seats though, but I've found that they will tell me if there's no chance to go standby that day if a flight is full. Empty seats are not profitable, so overbooking allows the airline to ensure that every seat on the airplane is making money for them. The “no-show rate,” which helps airlines determine how many extra tickets to sell, is determined by data from past flights connecting the same points.

Go far enough through the booking process to seat selection and you can see how many seats are free for each segment of your flights. That doesn't mean those seats are unsold, but more availability of seats to pick from usually indicates more seats unsold.
