Flight attendants generally cannot simply "pick" their base; rather, they submit a list of preferences (a "bid"), and assignments are made based on seniority and operational need. During initial training in 2026, new hires are given a list of available bases—such as NYC, DFW, or LAX—and must rank them. Those with the highest scores or seniority in the hiring class get their top choices first. If a base is "senior" (meaning many veteran attendants live there), it may take years for a junior attendant to successfully transfer there. Once based, an attendant can "bid" for a transfer to a different city every month or quarter, but the transfer only goes through if there is an opening and no one with more years of service has requested it first. Consequently, many new attendants "commute" by flying from their actual home to their assigned base until a spot in their preferred city opens up.
