Staying overnight in one of the five villages of the Cinque Terre—Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, or Monterosso—is highly recommended for travelers who want to experience the region without the overwhelming midday crowds. There are no large, chain-brand hotels in the region; instead, accommodation consists of affitacamere (rooms for rent), small family-run bed and breakfasts, and private apartments. Monterosso al Mare is the only village with traditional hotel-style properties and a proper beach, making it the most popular base for families. Vernazza and Manarola are considered the most romantic and "picture-perfect" options, though they require navigating many steep stairs with luggage. Corniglia, perched high on a cliff, offers a quieter, more local atmosphere as it is the only village not directly on the water. By staying overnight, you can enjoy the "Golden Hour" when the day-trippers and cruise ship passengers depart, leaving the colorful harbors and seafood trattorias to a much smaller, more peaceful group of visitors. Booking at least six months in advance is essential for the summer season.
