Can you swim at Monterosso for free?

Monterosso al Mare is the most touristic of the Cinque Terre. As soon as you leave the train station, you are immediately on the Fegina seafront. In front there are two free beaches, interspersed with a bathing establishment: free beach of Fegina and free beach of the Station.

Yes, you can swim at Monterosso al Mare for free, but you have to know where to look, as much of the beachfront is dominated by "Stabilimenti Balneari" (private beach clubs). Monterosso is the only town in the Cinque Terre with a large, sandy beach, and it is divided into "paid" and "free" sections. The free areas, known as "Spiaggia Libera," are typically marked by signs and are located at either end of the Fegina beach (near the giant "Statua del Gigante") and in the "Old Town" section near the harbor. In these free areas, you can simply roll out your towel on the sand or pebbles without paying the €30–€50 daily fee for a sunbed and umbrella. However, these free spots are quite small and become incredibly crowded during the peak summer months of July and August. In 2026, local authorities have also implemented occasional "crowd control" measures on the busiest days to ensure the free areas don't become a safety hazard. While the free beach lacks the amenities of the private clubs—like showers, changing rooms, and bars—the water is exactly the same: crystal-clear, refreshing, and perfectly safe for a dip in the Ligurian Sea.
