Can you take your car on the ferry to Aran Islands?

There are no car ferries operating to the islands. Ferries to the Aran Islands are for foot passengers only. There is another company operating a cargo boat from Galway Docks three days a week.

No, you cannot take your car on the ferry to the Aran Islands. All ferry services operating from Rossaveel, Doolin, and Galway City are passenger-only ferries. The islands of Inis Mór, Inis Meáin, and Inis Oírr have very limited road networks and strict local regulations intended to preserve their traditional character and minimize environmental impact. Visitors generally leave their cars in the large, secure parking lots available at the ferry terminals on the mainland. Once you arrive on the islands, the primary modes of transportation are bicycle rentals, horse-drawn carriages, and small local minibuses that offer guided tours. For those with significant mobility issues, a cargo boat service (Lasta Mara) occasionally runs from Galway to the islands and can transport vehicles for permanent residents or essential services, but this is not available to tourists. Exploring the islands on foot or by bike is widely considered part of the "Aran experience," allowing you to navigate the narrow, stone-walled lanes that would be impassable for most modern vehicles.
