Jones Beach is Long Island's iconic boardwalk. Its 2-mile stretch has buzz morning, noon and night. Come summer, it's a bona fide destination even if you don't have plans to hit the sand.

The Jones Beach Boardwalk traverses Jones Beach State Park, running parallel (and south of) Ocean Parkway. The pleasant pathway offers views of the beach and the ocean. Although bicycles are permitted, pedestrians have the right of way and bicyclists should dismount in crowded areas.
Jones Beach only has the boardwalk concessions--burgers, fries, ice cream, etc. Long Beach had a FANTASTIC board walk that was completely destroyed last year in Hurricane Sandy (it is currently being re-built, a small portion should be open this summer.) Jones Beach had some damage, but most of the board walk is open.
It's important to acknowledge that not all beaches are suitable for overnight stays, and one must exercise caution. However, if you do find a safe and suitable beach and come well-prepared, there can be some awesome benefits to snoozing on the sandy shores.
