Can you wash and reuse EarPlanes?

EarPlanes are reusable several times with frequent washing and storage, using common sense as a guide. Wash Cirrus EarPlanes ear plugs with a gentle non-abrasive hand soap and lukewarm water. Make sure to rinse them completely so no wax, soap, or debris remains.

According to the manufacturer's guidelines in 2026, EarPlanes are designed to be disposable and are technically only rated for two flights (one round trip). The reason is that the patented "CeramX" ceramic filter inside the earplug is extremely porous; over time, it becomes clogged with microscopic dust, airborne particles, and earwax, which prevents it from effectively regulating the shifting air pressure that causes ear pain. While you can gently wipe the exterior silicone with a damp cloth or mild soapy water to remove surface wax, you cannot wash the ceramic filter or submerge the entire plug in water. Doing so will ruin the filter’s ability to "breathe," rendering the product useless for pressure regulation on your next flight. For 2026 travelers who fly frequently, it is much safer to replace them after one round trip to ensure your ears are fully protected during takeoff and landing. If they look visibly "waxy" or the silicone feels stiff, it is a clear sign that the internal filter is likely compromised and a new pair is required for your comfort.

The earplugs may be re-used until they are dirty or no longer sticky (up to 5 uses). Keeping your hands and ears clean and dry prior to handling/applying the earplugs will help prolong the usable life of the earplugs.

Sleeping with earplugs is generally safe. However, regular use does come with some potential risks. Over time, they may push earwax back into your ear canal, causing a buildup. This can cause issues like ear pressure, tinnitus and temporary hearing loss.

Just put them in before takeoff, remove them when you get to the maximum flying altitude (if you like you can just leave them in throughout the flight) and put them back in about an hour before landing, for a comfortable, pain-free flight.
