Do you need 4WD in Canyonlands National Park?

Much of Canyonlands is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. These four-wheel-drive roads start at an intermediate difficulty and range to extremely technical. Make sure you have an appropriate vehicle well-equipped for the terrain and please do your research before attempting any off road trails.

Under normal conditions, Salt Valley Road is passable in two-wheel-drive vehicles and affords views of Klondike Bluffs and Tower Arch before heading out toward Interstate 70, but during periods of rain, this road may become undriveable. Hiking shoes: If you'll be visiting in the wintertime, some of Canyonlands' hikes, especially on rocky surfaces, can get quite icy, so I'd recommend bringing proper hiking boots (I've used these Merrell's for years and men's equivalent can be found here).
