Do you need a card for Sydney trains?

You must travel with a valid Opal card or ticket. Fare evasion is a crime and fines apply.

In 2026, you do not strictly need a physical Opal card to ride Sydney trains, though it remains a popular option for many travelers. Sydney's transport network is fully integrated with contactless payments, allowing you to tap on and off using any contactless credit or debit card, or a digital wallet on your smartphone or Apple Watch. The fare for tapping a bank card is identical to an Adult Opal card fare, including all daily and weekly "fare caps" (where travel becomes free after you spend a certain amount in a week). However, if you are eligible for concession rates—such as students, seniors, or children—you still require a specific Concession Opal card to access the half-price fares. For visitors, using a phone or watch is generally the most convenient method, provided you use the same device for both the tap-on and tap-off to avoid being charged a maximum "default fare" on your account.
