Do you need lightning lane for virtual queue?

Virtual queues are completely separate from Lightning Lane, and don't affect your ability to pay for a Individual Lightning Lane selection. In fact, if a ride has both a virtual queue and paid Individual Lightning Lane access, you can use both and ride it twice!

No, you do not need to purchase a Lightning Lane to use a virtual queue in 2026, but they serve two different functions. A Virtual Queue (accessed via the My Disney Experience app at 7:00 AM or 1:00 PM) is a free way to secure a spot for high-demand rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind or TRON Lightcycle / Run. If you successfully join the virtual queue, you will be assigned a Boarding Group and notified when it's your turn to ride. A Lightning Lane (either Multi Pass or Single Pass) is a paid service that allows you to skip the wait almost entirely at a specific time. In 2026, the two systems coexist: you can try for the free virtual queue, or you can pay for a Lightning Lane to guarantee a ride without the "lottery" aspect of the virtual queue. Essentially, a virtual queue gets you on the ride for free (with a potentially long wait once called), while a Lightning Lane gets you on quickly for a fee.
