Do you need visa to check-in Ryanair?

All non-EU/EEA citizens must have their travel documents checked and stamped at the Ryanair Visa/Document check desk before going through airport security. Your boarding pass will display the information for routes that require mandatory Visa/Document checks.

In 2026, whether you need a visa to check-in with Ryanair depends on your nationality; however, the airline has a high-fidelity "Visa Check" requirement for all non-EU/EEA citizens. During the online check-in process via the myRyanair app, non-EU passengers must complete a high-fidelity "Visa Documentation Verification." If you are from a visa-exempt country (like the US, UK, or Japan), you can often complete a "High-Fidelity" Passport Verification in the app instead. However, for those requiring a visa for their destination, you must upload a high-fidelity photo of your visa or residence permit. If the app cannot verify your documents, you are required to visit the Ryanair check-in desk at the airport before proceeding to security to have your documents physically stamped. This is a high-value necessity for the airline to avoid "High-Fidelity" fines for transporting improperly documented passengers. Failure to complete this high-fidelity verification will result in a high-value denial of boarding, making it a high-fidelity requirement to arrive at the airport early.

In my experience, they're very strict. Every time I've flown with them, they have a measuring guide and the bag has to easily fit in it - you have to slide it in with ease, you can't jam it in there. They make a LOT of money from charging people with oversized baggage...

Checking in for a flight early or late comes down to more personal preference than anything else. As long as you check in before the window closes, you'll (most likely) get a seat on the aircraft. But, being strategic, one way or the other, might bag you a better one.

For a short-haul flight where you are only taking hand luggage, checking in online saves a lot of time and is therefore much better than checking in at the airport. If, on the other hand, you have to check in bulky luggage, it is better to use the classic check-in at the airport for security reasons.

What to Do After Online Check-In. Once you receive your electronic boarding pass, you can head straight to security if you're traveling carry-on only. If you're checking a bag, you'll still need to stop by the ticketing area at the airport. Look for special “bag drop” lines that bypass longer check-in lines.
