Do you walk a lot at San Diego Safari Park?

There will be a lot of walking, so choose a path that will take you near a show around showtime. There are multiple playgrounds and shady areas to rest. Just like an expedition into the wild, you will need to take some provisions with you to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The Marina section of San Diego is a great place for pedestrians with a Walk Score of 94. Most errands can be accomplished on foot. There are hundreds of restaurants and coffee shops that you can walk to, as well as the Children's Museum.

Two Different Locations: Balboa Park and Escondido The reason you should not visit both San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park on the same day is that they are about 45 minutes apart from each other, without traffic (and there can be traffic along this busy freeway corridor).

The distance is about 35 miles. I don't recommend that you try to visit both parks on the same day. If you are short on time during your San Diego vacation, I would choose one or the other.

Each day, our Keepers assess the weather conditions and how our animals may be impacted, which means in inclement weather, some animals may not be visible on Safari for their own safety. Depending on the severity of the weather, other animals may need to be kept inside.

Controversy. There has been controversy about Safari World for its treatment of animals. Their operation came under international scrutiny when their treatment of animals, particularly orangutans and elephants, and keeping lion and tiger cubs in cramped cages.

Walking safaris are safe, provided you always listen to your guide and follow instructions. Wilderness guides are highly trained and incredibly experienced, and your safety is their main concern.

The generally accepted definition of a safari park is a drive-through park. Wild Animal Park or San Diego's version of a Safari Park does not provide that option, however, so the name change makes the zoo unique in an odd sort of way.
