Does Caltrain have a bullet train?

The Caltrain Express (CTX) project was implemented from 2002 to 2004 and led to the establishment of the Baby Bullet express service, which shortened the transit time between San Francisco and San Jose, and certain stations in between.

As of 2026, Caltrain does not have a "bullet train" in the Japanese or European sense, but it has successfully launched its electrified high-performance service. Following the completion of the Caltrain Electrification project in late 2024, the old diesel trains have been largely replaced by high-performance electric multiple units (EMUs). These new trains offer much faster acceleration and more frequent service, with "express" trains now traveling between San Francisco and San Jose in under an hour. While they can reach speeds of up to 79 mph (127 km/h), they are not true "high-speed rail." However, the Caltrain corridor is designed to eventually share its tracks with the California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) project, which will be a true bullet train system capable of speeds over 200 mph. In 2026, the electrified Caltrain serves as the foundational "backbone" for this future system, providing a much cleaner, quieter, and more efficient commuter experience for the Silicon Valley region while the state-wide bullet train infrastructure continues its phased construction.

In 2008, California voted yes to build the nation's first high-speed railway. The plan is to build an electric train that will connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in two hours and forty minutes. But 15 years later, there is not a single mile of track laid, and there isn't enough money to finish the project.

The project, as currently planned, would cost too much and take too long,” Newsom said as he took office. “There's been too little oversight and not enough transparency. Right now, there simply isn't a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A. I wish there were.”

High-speed rail is generally regarded as the pinnacle of attractive and green transportation. But all too often, it makes train travel more expensive and less flexible. In the end, costly high-speed lines may just push more people into cars.

Eighty percent of the 286 kilometers (177 mile) Maglev bullet train track will be located underground, passing under urban sprawl and mountainous terrain.
