Just Room Enough Island (also known as Hub Island) is designed to withstand the typical seasonal water fluctuations of the Saint Lawrence River, but it does not "flood" in the traditional sense of the house becoming submerged. The island is located in the Thousand Islands chain between New York and Ontario and is famous for being the smallest inhabited island in the world, with the house built literally to the water's edge. Because the Saint Lawrence River's levels are heavily managed by the International Joint Commission (IJC) through dams and power projects, the water level remains relatively stable. However, during record high-water years—such as 2017 and 2019—the water has been known to lap against the very foundation of the home and cover the small patch of "yard" where the family's wrought-iron chairs sit. The house was built on solid rock in the 1950s by the Sizeland family, and while the exterior walls are built to handle the proximity to the river, a major shift in water management or an extreme weather event could theoretically pose a risk of structural water damage.
