Does my Delta status reset every year?

Delta has four tiers of elite status: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. You can earn status by flying and spending enough within a single calendar year, and once earned you'll keep it through the following calendar year. So if you earn Gold status in February 2023, you'll keep it through the end of 2024.



That’s an excellent question, and the answer is yes, but with important nuances.

Your Delta Medallion Status (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond) is earned for a calendar year and is valid through January 31 of the following year. After that, it resets based on your qualifying activity in the previous year.

Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

1. The Earning Window (Qualification)

  • You earn status based on your Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) (or the MQD Waiver) in a given calendar year (January 1 – December 31).
  • The status you earn during this period will be effective immediately once you hit the threshold and will be valid for the rest of the current year and through the following January 31.

2. The Enjoyment Window

  • Status earned in 2024, for example, is valid from the moment you qualify until January 31, 2026.
  • This gives you a long “overlap” period—over a full year—to enjoy your benefits while working on re-qualifying for the next year.

3. The Reset (Re-qualification)

  • On February 1 of the new year, your status officially resets to whatever you earned based on your activity in the previous calendar year.
  • If you did not re-qualify, you will drop to a lower tier or back to general SkyMiles Member.
