How many platinum medallion members are there?

The vast majority, roughly 80% of medallions (or about 2% of all accounts) are silvers. About 12% of medallions (or about 0.3% of all accounts) are golds. About 6% of medallions (or about 0.15% of all accounts) are platinums, and as noted about 2% of medallions (or about 0.05% of all accounts) are diamonds.

Delta Air Lines does not publicly disclose the exact number of Platinum Medallion members, but industry analysts estimate the number to be between 400,000 and 600,000 worldwide. This tier is significantly more exclusive than Silver or Gold but far more common than the top-tier Diamond Medallion. In 2026, following Delta's major shifts in "Medallion Qualification Dollars" (MQD) requirements, the "population" of this tier has stabilized. Platinum status is highly coveted because it offers "Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades" to Comfort+ shortly after booking and 4 Regional Upgrade Certificates as a "Choice Benefit." While the number of members is large enough that "Upgrade Lists" can still be 50 people long at major hubs like Atlanta or Detroit, Platinum remains the "sweet spot" of the program, providing high-value perks without the extreme spending requirements of the Diamond level.

Delta Air Lines does not publicly disclose the exact number of Platinum Medallion members in its SkyMiles program. This information is considered proprietary and is not released in their annual reports or public filings.

However, we can make some educated inferences based on the program’s structure and available data:

  1. Tier Structure: Medallion Status is earned based on a combination of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) or card spend waivers. The tiers are:

    • Silver
    • Gold
    • Platinum
    • Diamond The number of members decreases significantly at each higher tier. Platinum is the second-highest tier.
  2. Public Data Points:

    • In a 2023 SEC filing, Delta stated it had over 100 million SkyMiles members total. The vast majority are general members with no status.
    • In 2019 (pre-pandemic), an internal Delta presentation leaked to View from the Wing suggested there were approximately 250,000 Platinum and Diamond members combined. Platinum members historically outnumber Diamond members by a significant margin.
    • Since 2019, Delta has made status harder to achieve by raising requirements and shifting to a revenue-based model (MQDs). This likely constrained the growth of the upper tiers.
  3. Recent Changes (2024): Delta announced major changes to the SkyMiles program for 2024, including:

    • Eliminating MQMs and moving to a pure Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) system.
    • Raising the MQD requirement for Platinum status from $12,500 to $15,000 (or 120 segments).
    • Introducing new “MQD Boost” bonuses from Delta-branded American Express cards.
    • Adding more ways to earn status through card spend alone.

These changes are designed to better align status with high-value customers and may slow the growth of the Platinum tier compared to recent years.

In summary:

While there is no official number, based on the historical data and tier structure, a reasonable estimate is that there are likely between 150,000 and 250,000 Delta Platinum Medallion members at any given time. This number fluctuates year-to-year based on travel patterns, economic conditions, and program changes.

For the most accurate understanding of the current landscape, you would need access to Delta’s internal membership reports, which are not public.
