Does St Maarten have good snorkeling?

The Dutch part of Saint-Martin, which comprises the south of the island, also has sites where you can enjoy the pleasures of snorkeling. The best beaches for snorkeling are located west of Simpson Bay: Mullet Bay, but also Cupecoy Beach, are prime sites for a beach + snorkeling day.

In 2026, St. Maarten/St. Martin offers excellent snorkeling, especially for those who visit the protected marine reserves. The standout location is Pinel Island, a small islet off the French side (Cul de Sac), which features a designated snorkeling trail in shallow, crystal-clear water where you can regularly spot sea turtles, rays, and colorful parrotfish. Creole Rock, located near Grand Case, is another top-tier site for diverse reef life, though it typically requires a short boat excursion. For those preferring beach-entry snorkeling, Mullet Bay on the Dutch side has rocky outcroppings that house schools of tropical fish, and Dawn Beach is known for its healthy coral, though the water can be choppier there. While some reefs are still recovering from historic storm damage, the 2026 efforts by local conservation groups to install "biorock" artificial reefs have significantly boosted the underwater biodiversity, making it one of the most accessible snorkeling destinations in the Caribbean.
