Does Swiss pass cover all trains in Switzerland?

The Swiss Travel Pass includes all journeys by train, bus and boat. In addition, during the validity of the pass you get free admission to over 500 Swiss museums and 50% discount on most mountain railroads (Rigi, Stoos and Stanserhorn free).

The Swiss Travel Pass covers nearly all trains on the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) network and most private railways, but it is not "100% universal" for high-mountain excursions. In 2026, it provides unlimited travel on standard intercity trains, local S-Bahn trains, postal buses, and even lake boats. It also includes free public transit in over 90 cities. However, while "scenic" trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express are fully covered (meaning the "fare" is $0), you must still pay a mandatory seat reservation fee (approx. CHF 30–50). For high-altitude mountain railways like the Jungfraubahn (to Jungfraujoch) or the Gornergrat Railway in Zermatt, the pass only provides a 25% to 50% discount rather than full coverage. A "pro-tip" for 2026 is that the pass fully covers the trip to Mt. Rigi and Stanserhorn, making them the best value for pass-holders who want a "free" mountain experience without the expensive supplemental tickets required for the higher peaks.
