Does Taipei MRT take credit card?

Suppliers will roll out the service at more than 120 stations and likely on more than 1,500 gates on the six-line metro, which serves Taiwan's capital and adjoining New Taipei City. It will support such major credit card brands as Visa and Mastercard and NFC payments services Apple Pay and Google Wallet.

As of July 2026, the Taipei MRT (Taipei Metro) has officially rolled out its "Open Loop" payment system, meaning it now accepts contactless credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and JCB) at all ticket gates. This major upgrade, which began its phased launch in early 2026, allows international travelers and locals to simply tap their physical credit card or mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay) to enter and exit the system without needing to purchase an EasyCard or iPass. Prior to this update, the Taipei MRT was one of the few major Asian metros that still required a dedicated transit card. In addition to credit cards, the system also supports QR code payments via popular apps like Line Pay and JKOPay. While the classic EasyCard remains the most popular choice for long-term residents due to its integration with convenience stores and bike rentals (YouBike), the addition of credit card support has made navigating Taipei significantly more convenient for short-term tourists and business travelers.
