Amtrak roomettes are numbered differently depending on whether you are on a Superliner (double-decker) or a Viewliner (single-decker) train. On a Superliner, roomettes 1 through 10 are located on the upper level, while roomettes 11 through 14 are on the lower level. Roomette 1 is traditionally reserved for the car attendant. If you are traveling with a companion and want to be across the hall from each other, you should look for consecutive numbers with the odd number first (e.g., 3 and 4). On a Viewliner, which is common on East Coast routes, there are 11 or 12 roomettes arranged along a single corridor. In these cars, roomette 12 is usually the attendant's room. Viewliner roomettes are unique because they feature two windows for the top bunk, whereas Superliners do not. Regardless of the car type, your specific car and room number will be printed on your ticket, and the attendant will have a manifest to guide you to your exact location once you board the train.
