In my opinion, sleeper cars make the ride into a pleasure. So civilized. For me, once I did a room, I'll never do coach overnight again. Daytime only, I do coach, anything overnight, forget it.

As other posters have indicated, you should be fine riding AMTRAK solo on an overnight run. Being in a confined space with no escape route tends to deter would-be criminals.
While securing all your belongings with these techniques might give you peace of mind… never have peace of mind. Always be alert. Sleeping is fine (it is a night train after all) but don't ever inhibit yourself further by dosing up on sleeping pills or drinking excessively on the train.

Only sleeper car passengers have access to the showers. They are located in the sleeper cars on the lower level in Superliner train cars on down the hall on the Viewliner train cars. Amtrak provides a few items for you and the room attendant keeps the shower clean.
