The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a multi-depth, man-made saltwater pool designed to be safe for all ages in 2026. The water depth is gradual, starting from a very shallow "beach entry" on the edges (perfect for toddlers to splash in just a few inches of water) and reaching a maximum depth of approximately 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) in the center and at the far end near the iconic woven fish sculptures. This depth is intentional, as it allows most adults to stand comfortably while still providing enough water for recreational swimming. The lagoon is divided into various sections, with some "pockets" on the left side featuring distinct depths to keep children in safe, visible zones. Because the lagoon is free of the crocodiles and marine stingers found in the adjacent Coral Sea, it remains the most popular swimming spot in the city, fully patrolled by lifeguards throughout the day in 2026.
