How do Lumo trains work?

Lumo runs low-cost trains on the East Coast mainline. In some ways it's something completely new to the British network and has been likened to a budget airline on rails. There's no first class, no dining car and no paper tickets — but there are single fares from London to Edinburgh for less than £20.
