How does Disney standby line work?

Standby Queue: This is the traditional queue or line quests wait in for attractions. All guests have access to the standby line during theme park operating hours. Virtual Queue: Occasionally, a virtual queue may be used for select attractions or experiences.

Seeing long wait times can be a deterrent, which is why Disney is eliminating wait times for attractions. Imagine you're in Tomorrowland and you just got off of Space Mountain. The ratio we are supposed to work off normally is 4:1. 4 lightning lane for every 1 standby guest. Obviously you don't just send 4 lightning lane and then 1 standby guests but you send larger groups in multiples of that ratio.

How Does it Work? In order to access the Extended Evening Hours, guests will need a valid ticket or pass and a theme park reservation for the same park on the same day. You will also need to use your MagicBand, Disney MagicMobile pass, or Key to the World to prove which resort you are staying at.

Each guest who buys Disney Genie+ service can bypass the standby line at select attractions on the day of their purchase using the Lightning Lane entrance. Lightning Lane is simply the name for the line you use to skip standby!

Because the number of park reservations is limited, they can occasionally run out. If you have found that the date you wish to visit no longer has reservations available, it's still worth checking the theme park reservation availability calendar often. So yes, in theory, tickets can be purchased at the gate. However, I do not recommend waiting until you are at the gate to purchase your tickets. To manage theme park attendance, Walt Disney World Resort has introduced the Disney Park Pass reservation system.

The Genie 120-minute rule says that you can make a new reservation at most 2 hours from when you made the last one, and this countdown timer doesn't change if you modify the reservation. If you made it at, say, 11 a.m., then your two hours will be up at 1 p.m. even if you modify the reservation at noon.
