How does go transit work in Toronto?

To pay your fare, you can tap your physical PRESTO card, PRESTO in Google Wallet, tap your credit/debit card, buy an E-ticket or pass, or buy a paper ticket. You use the same ticket, pass or card whether you take a GO train, a GO bus, or a combination of both for your trip.

GO Transit is the regional public spokesperson for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), connecting downtown Toronto with its surrounding suburbs and cities via an extensive network of trains and buses. The system is hub-and-spoke, with nearly all rail lines originating or terminating at Union Station in the heart of the city. To use the system in 2026, the most seamless method is the PRESTO system, which allows you to "tap" your physical card, smartphone, or credit/debit card on a reader at the start and end of your trip. Fares are calculated based on the distance traveled between "zones." A major feature of the current system is the "One Fare" program, which allows for free transfers between GO Transit and local agencies like the TTC, MiWay, or Brampton Transit. The iconic green-and-white double-decker "Superlo" buses and bi-level train coaches run frequently, with many rail lines now offering "all-day, two-way" service every 15 to 30 minutes. It is a "proof of payment" system, so you don't show your ticket to a driver; instead, you must be prepared for random inspections by transit officers to ensure you have tapped on correctly.

Q: Can I use my PRESTO to pay for someone else with me (in addition to using it to pay my own fare)? A: No. However, you may lend your card to someone else if they are in the same fare category as you (i.e. if you have a student pass on your card, the person borrowing it cannot use it unless they are also a student).
