How does standby priority work?

Standby passengers who don't get seats are rolled into the standby list for the next flight. Standby passengers typically have priority based on how much they paid for their tickets and their relative status in the airline's frequent flyer program.

Standby priority in 2026 is a complex hierarchy that ensures seats are filled fairly. The list is generally topped by Revenue Standby (passengers whose original flight was canceled or delayed) and Elite Status members (Diamond/1K/Executive Platinum). After those, the list is sorted by Fare Class (full-price tickets over discounted ones) and finally by Time of Request. If you are "Non-Rev" (airline employees or their families using passes), you are at the very bottom of the list. Most airlines now use a digital "Standby List" in their mobile apps, allowing you to see your rank in real-time. Priority can shift up until the moment the boarding door closes. Pro-tip for 2026: If you are trying to get on an earlier flight, check in as early as possible, as "Date and Time of Request" often serves as the tie-breaker for passengers with the same status level.
