How does Toronto ferry work?

There are three different pedestrian ferries that take visitors to three different locations: Ward's Island, Centre Island, and Hanlan's Point. The ferry ride is approximately 15 minutes. All the islands are connected to each other and visitors can walk or bike from one to another.

The Toronto Island Ferry is a public transit service managed by the City of Toronto that connects the downtown Jack Layton Ferry Terminal (at Bay St. and Queens Quay) to three different points on the Toronto Islands: Centre Island, Ward’s Island, and Hanlan’s Point. In 2026, the system is highly digital; you are strongly encouraged to buy tickets online in advance to skip the long ticket booth lines, especially on summer weekends. Your ticket is a "round trip" fare, meaning you only scan it once on the mainland and can board any returning ferry from any of the three island docks for free. During peak summer season, ferries run approximately every 15 to 30 minutes from 8:00 AM until late at night. Ward’s Island is the best for a quiet walk through residential cottages, Centre Island is for the amusement park and beaches, and Hanlan’s Point is home to the famous clothing-optional beach. Note that while the ferry is the traditional route, many locals now use private water taxis (roughly $12–$15 per person) for a faster, more flexible ride back to the city during crowded sunset hours.
