How far outside of London can I use my 60+ Oyster card?

The 60+ Oystercard allows Londoners to travel for free on TfL services from 09:00 weekdays, as well as anytime on weekends and bank holidays. It also allows holders of the pass to travel for free after 9:30am on National Rail services within London on weekdays and anytime on weekends and bank holidays.

Your 60+ Oyster card (also known as the Freedom Pass for 60+) is valid for free travel across all of Greater London on:

  • London Underground (Tube)
  • London Overground
  • Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
  • Elizabeth line (within London zones 1-9)
  • London Buses (any bus in London, regardless of operator)
  • London Trams
  • London River Services (with some discounts, not always free)
  • Most National Rail services within the London Fare Zones 1-9.

Key Boundary: The “London Fare Zones”

The crucial limit is that your free travel is generally only valid within the London Fare Zones 1-9. This includes many areas outside the central London core, stretching quite far into the suburbs.

Some notable “outside London” stations you CAN travel to for free (because they are in Zones 7-9) include:

  • Shenfield (Elizabeth line - Zone 9)
  • Brentwood (Zone 9)
  • Epsom (Zone 9)
  • Hertford North (Zone 9 - with some time restrictions)
  • Watford Junction (London Overground - Zone 9)
  • Broxbourne (Zone 9)
  • Gatwick Airport (NOT included. Southern Rail services to Gatwick are outside the zones and require a separate ticket.)

Where it DOES NOT work (Important Limits)

Your 60+ Oyster card is not valid for free travel on services that start and end outside the London Fare Zones, even if the train company is
