How long does the DFDS ferry take?

We're the only cross-channel ferry operator to offer this route and our multiple daily crossings take just 4 hours. In high season and during the holidays, we advise customers to allow at least 120 minutes prior to departure to pass through all controls. More information regarding check-in can be found here. All passengers must present relevant documents upon arrival to the terminal for check-in.

The quickest and most direct cross-Channel ferry route is Dover to Calais, taking around 1 and a half hours. There are 38 sailings to Calais every day.

Dover ? Calais DFDS Seaways sail from Dover to Calais 10 times per day, which takes around 90 minutes and tickets are all open so you can travel on the first (and most convenient) ferry after you have arrived at the port.

We recommend arriving 45 minutes to one hour prior to your scheduled departure time. This allows for plenty of time for vehicles to get checked-in at the toll booth, and for foot passengers to check-in with the ticket counter inside the terminals.

If you miss your ferry due to delays at the port or problems with the ferry operator, you'll usually get put on the next available boat.

Priority boarding is available on our Dover to Calais and Dover to Dunkirk routes and is the best way to start your holiday. You'll be one of the first set of passenger vehicles to board and disembark, leaving you more time to relax onboard or driving towards your destination.

If you are running late and are likely to miss your ferry, we suggest proceeding to the port to see if the ferry company will allow you to change the ticket to a different day or departure time. Keep in mind that if you do miss your ferry, the tickets are non-refundable.

The ferries in our region are free, including the tourist attraction, the Kootenay Lake Ferry, which is the longest free ferry in the world. It's a 35-minute journey covering 8km, and operates year round.

If you are thinking of leaving your car on the ship, you will not be able to, and you must park your car at Dover and cross as a foot passenger. If you take your car on the ferry, you drive on, leave the car, join it again when told at Calais and drive off.
