The Shinkansen journey from Tokyo Station to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (the gateway to Hokkaido) typically takes between 3 hours and 57 minutes and 4 hours and 20 minutes. This route is served by the high-speed Hayabusa train on the Tohoku and Hokkaido Shinkansen lines. The train travels through the Seikan Tunnel, one of the world's longest undersea tunnels, to reach the northern island. While the bullet train currently ends at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, travelers must transfer to a local "Hokuto" limited express train to reach Sapporo, which adds another 3.5 hours. However, construction is well underway in 2026 to extend the Shinkansen line all the way to Sapporo, with a goal of reducing the total Tokyo-to-Sapporo travel time to approximately 5 hours once the final segment is completed in the early 2030s.
